Mercy Health Glass City Marathon Free Race Entry Giveaway

With 2017 just weeks away it is time to look ahead and make plans for your vacations, family functions, shenanigans, tea parties, and races. My first vacation of 2017 is extremely early in the month, I don’t have my shenanigans or tea parties planned out, but my race schedule is solid.

I officially start training with Dave’s Marathon In Training Group on Tuesday, January 3. I am pretty sure I am going to be registering for the Owens Corning Half Marathon. After two failed full’s I think I’ll stick to the half distance for a year and try a third stab at a full in the near future. I finished the first but I inured my knee during the race, I had to DNF the second because of my heart, I hope my third attempt in the future will work out.

As the head Ambassador for the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon I get to spread holiday cheer by giving away TWO free race entries. My great team of Ambassadors have all given away their free race entries and now this is your final chance to win! How fantastic would your holiday be if you received an entry to the race you were already planning on running on Sunday, April 23, 2017?

If you want to run the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon, Owens Corning Half Marathon or the Medical Mutual Glass City 5k, then you have a chance to win a free entry! The giveaway runs from 12:01 a.m. on Monday, December 12 through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, December 18. Each registrant has the opportunity to submit up to six entries.

Each form of entry WILL be validated if selected. If you say you followed on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or posted a blog comment, then please do so. If I draw your name for the free entry and you have not fulfilled the requirement your entry will be disqualified.

Miracle on Main Street 5k Recap

2016-12-04-12-58-35The Inaugural Miracle on Main Street 5k was this afternoon and it was a race that I am definitely adding to my calendar every year.

It started and finished on Main Street in Sylvania, Ohio, located just outside of Toledo. A field of almost 500 runners lined up as holiday music played, setting a festive atmosphere. The race course ran through Sylvania and started with a hill just before we passed Flower Hospital. Northwest Ohio is known for being flat so any kind of hill is a big deal. The rest of the course was essentially flat and fast.

There were spectators at the finish line who did a great job at helping give me that final boost needed to finish the race strong! This is always appreciated!

When I finished, my Garmin time was 2 seconds slower than my PR on Thanksgiving at Dave’s Turkey Chase 5k. I was really hoping for another PR today and that the actual chip time was different from my Garmin. My final chip time was 30:53, one freaking second slower than my PR of 30:52. Ughhhhh. Of course I’m thinking of the shoulda, coulda, woulda’s of the race. But I’m thrilled that I ran a race almost exactly as I did 11 days ago.

Part of my team of Mercy Health Glass City Marathon Ambassadors also ran the race. I think we all enjoyed it immensely! The race was executed to perfection, which is a hard thing to do during a new race.2016-12-04-15-38-16I’m not sure if I’m running anymore races in 2016, but my 2017 calendar is packed!

Giving Tuesday with the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon

The final week in November is definitely consumer driven in nature.
Thanksgiving – another day of consumerism now
Black Friday
Small Business Saturday
Keep Buying All the Things Sunday
Cyber Monday
Giving Tuesday

Of all of these days, Giving Tuesday is the lesser known for sure.
After you start your holiday shopping and go hog wild buying and buying and buying, it is time to give back on this day. Consider donating to one of the many charities that the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon supports.

Select any of the 13 charities from this page and give generously to one or more of the organizations in need. Help the marathon reach their goal of raising $50,000 to donate to their charities. Help us celebrate Giving Tuesday!

What You Need to Know About Dave’s Turkey Chase 5k & Kids Run

Thanksgiving is in less than FOUR days and I’m completely geeked! I am that nerd who plans out the entire day so I stay on track. My schedule for Thursday begins with Dave’s Turkey Chase 5k & Kids Run!daves-turkey-chase-logo-for-partners-2016This is the second year for the Turkey Chase and it sounds like it’ll be even better than the first. I really enjoyed the inaugural running and I’m excited to see the changes in year two!
Here are a few things to know about Thursday:

Where and What Time is the Race?
WTOL-11 in Downtown Toledo
730 North Summit, Toledo, 43604
The 5k begins at 9 a.m.
The Kids Fun Run begins at 8:30 a.m.

What is the Race Course?
(click on the map to enlarge)2016-turkey-chase-5k-course-mapIt starts on Summit St. at WTOL 11, turning right onto Monroe St. passed 5/3 Field, then turns right onto Huron St. passing by the Huntington Center. Can I Track a Runner or Give my Info to Friends and Family to Track Me? I’m Probably Going to Win the Whole Thing and Want Them to Watch.
Yes! This race is offering free race day live tracking and cheers through the RaceJoy app. Download it on your phone and you’ll be able to set this up in no time. It is the same tracking app used for the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon.

I Know NOTHING About Parking in Downtown Toledo!
For getting to and from the Turkey Chase 5k start/finish line, the most convenient parking is at the Vistula Parking Garage. You will be required to pay $5 upon entering. The gates will be opened after the start of the race so that you can leave without any delay once you finish the race.

You may also park at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 740 N Superior St., or any other downtown lot, meter and legal parking spot. All parking is at your own risk.

Maritime Plaza — Volunteers Only
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral — $5 Parking Donation to Church
Vistula — $5 Event Parking
Ample parking is available in the Vistula Parking Garage. Use the entrance off of Superior. — View Map

Did You Sayyyyy Kids Run?
Sure did. Kids 1/4 mile Turkey Chase run starts at 8:30 a.m., immediately followed by the 1/2 mile option. There is no charge for these events, but all participants must be registered and wearing an official BIB to participate.

Are There Water Stops? I’ll Simply Die Without Water.
Then you’re in luck because there are two water stops on the course! Near mile 1 and near mile 2. Of course there will be goodies at the finish line, like that free banana we all love so much.

Does Running a 5k Negate All of my Thanksgiving Calories?
Now I’m not a doctor or registered dietitian, but I think it does! A 5k offsets ALL of the calories you eat during the course of the day. Just another reason to come out and run with your family and friends!
yeah, that may be a bunch of BS, but you can believe everything you read on the internet. the internet told me so.

Holy Turkey I Forgot to Register! Where Can I Take Care of This?
You can still register online here or stop in to Dave’s Running Shop in Perrysburg or Sylvania on Tuesday and Wednesday between 12-8 p.m. OR you can register the day of the race, starting at 7:30 a.m. at the WTOL 11 parking lot.

If you have any questions, ask away! Otherwise, I’ll see you on Thursday morning!

Dave’s Marathon In Training Program for the 2017 Mercy Health Glass City Marathon

2017-spring-mitI was a solo runner for 5+ years.
My pace was constantly changing due to my heart issue. I was self conscious about how I looked when I ran. To tell you the truth, I liked the solitude.

I had the opportunity to train for the 2016 Mercy Health Glass City Marathon with Dave’s Marathon In Training group this past spring and it was a game-changer in my running life. Never before have I been immediately welcomed to a group and had such a great time running with other people. I still enjoy my solo runs, but now I have a running family that I can run with anytime.

Like it or not, 2017 is right around the corner and it’s time to start planning your spring race season. No matter what your goal is, to qualify for Boston or just to have fun and finish the race, the Marathon In Training program will work for you.
The spring Dave’s Marathon In Training offers nine different pace groups for each the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon and the Owens Corning Half Marathon. The training includes a training plan, three group runs each week (speed, tempo, long run), discounts to Dave’s races, weekly emails with tips and explanations of workouts, coupons to Dave’s Running Shop and some amazing swag. Ohhhh, the swag!

For registering for spring 2017 Dave’s Marathon In Training you’ll receive the following:
A North Face backpack. North Face, people!backpack A Nike 1/4 zip pullover for those long winter training runs.quarter-zip A Dave’s Marathon In Training t-shirt.shirtRegister before December 10 when the price for Marathon In Training increases. The training begins the week of January 2 so it’s time to pick your race and register for 16 weeks of fun!
I’m already signed up and can’t wait to get back to running with the group.

Tubing

I don’t even know where to begin.
Last week was Homecoming at work and that means 75+ hours of busy af and running around like crazy.
It is absolutely worth it when it comes to the day of Homecoming, but the week before can be rough sometimes.

To add to the busy schedule, I had a minor surgery on Monday. Nothing big, I had an ear tube in my left ear. No, I am not seven years old. No, I don’t have constant ear infections.
Why get one?
I had a double ear infection, for the first time in 10 or more years, and while doing something extremely sexy like blowing my nose, I ruptured my ear drum. I felt it pop and then I got extremely dizzy. It was awesome.

My ear, nose and throat doc (ENT) let me know that if it didn’t heal on its own, that it would need something done to help it heal. Hence, the tube. Nine months later and it hadn’t improved in any way. I am feeling pretty well now, three days after surgery, but still not best. My ear is even more muffled and full of pressure than it was before, but this is normal I was told. So, until I heal more, I won’t be hearing as well for a bit.
This meaning, if you plan on sneaking up on me, do so on the left side as I can’t hear as well from that ear.

Other than recovering from surgery and Homecoming week, I’m just trying to get back into the swing of things. Especially with bodybuilding and running. I need to get back to the dedication I had before the crazy began. I’m cutting, which as any bodybuilding understands, isn’t the most fun thing ever invented. Carbs are life and giving some of them up is rough af!

I do have a new inspiration to my life regarding…well, everything…and that has made all the difference. Finding someone who makes you want to be a better person is life changing and I’ve never experienced that before.
Life is happy again in a way it wasn’t ever before.

MacQueen’s Run For Your Life 10k 2016 Recap

Today was full of a million amazing things and I’m still riding my runners high 10 hours later.
Let’s start with a recap of the past MacQueen’s Run For Your Life 10k’s I’ve run.
2014 (Inaugural race): 1:15:12 (12:07 pace)
2015: 1:06:45 (10:45 pace) <—- an 8:27 PR from 2014
2016: 1:04:58  (10:28 pace) <—- a 1:47 PR from 2015

Another PR, oh yeah! This is the second Run Toledo race this year that I have PR’d at…I still have two more this year so I am expecting more PR’s!

I am a little surprised that I did get my PR for a few reasons.
1 – I didn’t train in any way for it and my longest run in around two months is four miles and I only ran one other time besides that
2 – my heart hasn’t been kind to my breathing lately, hence my retreat from running
3 – I was nervous AF about getting a PR and thought that I’d let it get to my head
4 – I walked a few times to slow my heart rate so my breathing normalized, and even with those breaks I was still faster

I showed up at MacQueen’s crazy early today because I wanted a good parking spot and because I wanted to use the clean inside bathroom. Yeah, a lot of people don’t know about the inside bathroom and wait for the porta potties. Well, now you all know…luckily you’ll all forget by this time next year.
Getting there early was great because I had the time to hang out with my fellow Mercy Health Glass City Marathon Ambassadors who were also running the race.

Dean is one of the Ambassadors that I ask back year after year because of his passion for running and I am happy we have made a friendship through running. Plus, he went to the same high school as me, making him a bad ass.

2016-10-09-08-19-15-1Here is my whole crew that ran today. I know a few of us achieved a PR and you can’t have a bad time here even if you don’t PR. I mean, you get MacQueen’s donuts at the end of the race! These are some epic donuts.
Brian, Sarah, of course that’s just me, Dean, Andrea, and Lisa represented the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon with me today. Good looking bunch, am I right??2016-10-09-08-42-33-3There is one thing that all runners have to deal with when it comes to racing.
The bad race picture. Unless you have spidey sense about where the cameras are, you have had a bad race picture at some point. Luckily, this is my worst one from the 10k today. I say luckily because it isn’t all that bad. Other than my brow being furrowed and my tongue sticking out because I’m licking my lips. My form looks good though! I’ll take that as a win.2016-10-09-19-25-12Now this is what finish line pictures are made of, folks! It is a rarity that my finish line pictures have me smiling and not having some epic flaw involved. Only one small thing. My left leg seems to be eating my shorts. You see, I have three pairs of these black compression shorts that I like to race in. One is perfect and never moves on my leg or creeps up my waist. The second pair seems to always move down my leg, it’s as if they get longer the further I run. Then the third pair, oh the third pair,,,they creep up my waist until they’re making out with my sports bra it feels like and then they creep up my legs making them into some non-race-friendly booty shorts that I’d never run in. It is always a lottery when I select a pair from my drawer. Today I selected pair three, the pair that creeps upwards on my body, causing me to fuck with them the entire race. People behind me probably laughed because of how often I had to pull them down on my thighs.
With that being said, this is a bomb ass race picture that I’m going to cherish forever!2016-10-09-18-31-37-2I forgot to look at the clock when I finished the race but by Garmin time I had a great PR and after the chip times were posted I was elated at my finish time.  I did tweak my knee in my mad sprint to the finish line. Just enough to make it swell up all day and all night, and make stairs painful. It’ll pass though.

This is my third MacQueen’s Run For Your Life 10k and I’m going to continue running them until I can’t The race is incredibly well run, the atmosphere is unbeatable and there are donuts. Donuts, people. Donuts.
