Happy Belated Birthday to This Old Lady

That’s right, I said Happy Birthday to myself because why the hell not?

So, when your new job duties include being on your computer all day, it is hard to want to be on your laptop at night. The only time I do crack my laptop at night is to work. I like my new job duties, but they definitely keep me hopping.

In between my working and working and working, I found some time to run a few races of Labor Day weekend. Labor Day? Yeah, I’m just catching up from two weeks ago.

Chad and I ran in the Boy Scout Half Marathon & 5k. We ran the Tenderfoot 5k. The weather was perfect for running and Chad ended up with a new PR. I did not PR at all. Not even close. I haven’t run in quite some time and knew I wouldn’t be at my best. But, I always love a good run for fun! As a Run Toledo Ambassador, I was able to rep them with my swanky new ambassador shirt.

The very next day we ran in the Olander 24 Hour Ultra Run. This was an experience for sure! There are two ways to participate in the run; as an individual and as a team. The goal is to run as many laps around Olander Park as possible. Each lap is 1.091 miles. Imagine damn near 24 hours of running. Wow, right?
The winning individual ran 110 laps which equals out to 120.07 miles. The winning team ran 149.9 laps which equals 163.62 miles. The team I was on, Candu Run Run, finished with 146.61 laps which equals 160.02 miles. We were SO damn close to winning.

I’ve been keeping up with the gym (and not running as I should) and since Chad and I moved in together, I don’t live next to the Maumee River. Crazy sad because I love living near the water, but I remembered that there is an amazing park that I love to visit, Bo loved it too.

I celebrated my 36th birthday last week and which I loathe getting older, it isn’t getting to me…too much. The number ‘6’ behind the the 3 is hard to read to be honest with you. Time is slipping past me and I can’t handle it sometimes.

Look at this amazing cake that Chad got for me. I have never had my picture on a cake and this was awesome. I have had my fill of cake for a little while. HA, lies! Anyone who knows me knows that I can eat cake every damn day! But I don’t because my ass is the size of Ohio otherwise. Chad made this a fantastic day for me and I’m thankful I have him in my life to do all the things with me. 

I have a ton of races on my calendar this fall and I’m going to be around more in an annoyingly fun way.

Run Toledo Ambassador

I started running in late 2010 and I didn’t know how much it would affect my life. I ran my first half marathon in April 2011 (Owens Corning Half Marathon) and my first marathon in April 2012 (Glass City Marathon). Since then I’ve run the half marathon again, the 5k twice, and attempted the marathon once. I really love this race and everything that it stands for.

I wanted to get more involved with the Glass City Marathon and started the Ambassador program. The 2018 race will be the fifth year of Ambassadors and will be the best one yet. Having a small hand in helping the Toledo community is such an amazing feeling.

I am now lucky enough to be able to help with Run Toledo, a great race management company who run the best running/duathon/triathon events. I have run many of their races, but haven’t yet dipped into the du’s and tri’s. (see what I did there?!)
I’ll be hanging out at a lot of these events and I look forward to seeing you there.

Super Hot Weather is for Vacation Only

You know when it’s really hot and you feel like your face is going to melt off if you simply walk outside? Or how it can be pointless to shower in the morning if you’re planning on spending the day outside because sweating is your job when it’s really hot?
Don’t get me wrong, I like warm weather. Hot on the other hand…makes me stabby.

There is one definite in my life and that is a firm hatred of hot weather. I don’t mind a good sweat, just not when I’m doing nothing other than standing or sitting. It almost goes without saying that I loathe running outside in the summer. Pair this with a deep-seated aversion of running on Satan’s conveyor belt and you get an end result of no running. I’m cool with this. I have been avoiding summer running every single year as a runner. My heart ish also does poorly with the heat. When the heart rate rises, the heart beats faster and harder causing more blood to flow backwards through the heart. You’d imagine that this isn’t the best thing to happen, right? And, frankly, I enjoy the time off, sometimes. 

I am 100% ready for cooler temperatures. Only downside right now is that we have at least two more months of hot af weather. Another downside is that I have a race to train for, so I’ll have to suck it up and run. I’ll run slowly due to the heat, but I’ll be running.

 

 

2017 Ohio Michigan 8k

It’s done. I registered us for the Ohio Michigan 8k.
This will be the longest race that Chad has ever run and my fourth or fifth time running this race.

It is always hot and humid and while I want to hate it, I love this race SO much. Since I started running six+ years ago I have always made a point to fit this race in my calendar. While the scenery is typical Ohio Michigan farmland-type action, the after party is what makes the evening truly fun.

I couldn’t run the race last year due to only being 2 months post-op, but I’m back this year and ready to PR. I haven’t run this race since I started my new heart medication in December of 2016 and started running around two minutes per mile faster, so I have no clue what I’ll be able to accomplish. Of course, I have a goal finish time in mind and I’m going to do everything I can to hit it.

The Power of the Schwartz – Knee Surgery #6 Status Report

One year ago today was knee surgery #6 (all on the same knee). It is always a struggle to get back to pre-surgery shape with that leg and this post-op experience was no different. The biggest pain in the ass is strengthening my quad since I lost 3″ in it right after the surgery. It happens within the first 24-28 hours and it is a huge obstacle to overcome every time. Please google quad atrophy after knee surgery and read up on why this happens so drastically and quickly. There are a lot of big words that explain it and ain’t nobody got time for that in a post.

Here is a bad ass picture of the issue with my knee last year. I thought it was my tibia chipping off in that area, but it was only a meniscus tear.


This is where it gets fun
. My femur had tiny cracks in it when I first injured it at 15 years old and it was smoothed out and essentially as good as new. Then it started to chip during marathon #1 in 2012 and it was smoothed out again. It needed to be smoothed out yet again one year ago today. It is normal wear and tear for a knee like mine and will essentially continue to be normal for me.
I think these pictures are amazing and I love to see the issues that are fixed. Maybe it comes from a family with a strong medical background? Maybe it comes from a fascination with the inside of my knee? Who knows.

One year later I am still running and lifting. I am building my quad muscle and have gained around 1.5″ back, which isn’t too shabby I thnk. I have work to do, but I always will.

I will continue to need maintenance surgeries over the years to come, eventually leading to a total/partial knee. I am putting that off as long as possible of course.

A Big Thank You

I am still decompressing from the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon weekend.
This race always holds a special place in my heart as it was my first half marathon and my first full marathon.

In 2014 I was lucky enough to join the marathon race committee to oversee a team of race Ambassadors. My eight Ambassadors for 2017 were fantastic and I am proud of each of them for running such fantastic races, some even had a great PR!

I’m already looking forward to the 2018 race and the exciting things that the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon race committee has in the works.

What is one of the most important things to a runner? Aside from shoes, clothing, and hoping for some great weather, FOOD!
When it comes to racing, a runner needs to be sure to fuel properly pre and post race. What you eat can make or break a race sometimes.
