I Unexpectedly Found Clarity, Direction & Purpose

Are there ever times when a workout helps to clear your head, or brings you clarity, or gives you the confidence you’ve been looking for? Does a workout sometimes give you a renewed sense of direction or purpose in your life?

I had two of those last night.
I went to the gym and lifted shoulders (one of my favorite things to lift) and hit a few a la cart areas as well. A lot of my favorite areas in the gym were full of people and I hate waiting around, so I lifted what I could. A little abs, a little triceps, a little legs…it was a good gym day. That was the first workout that helped to give me the feelings listed above.

Then I got home and took Bo for a walk.
He smelled things, he smiled back at me a few times to let me know he loved our walk, he stalked some ducks, and we generally had a very fulfilling walk. I’m not the kind of person to refer to a walk as fulfilling, so this means it was fairly epic for me.2015-05-18 19.45.46Both of my workouts tonight made me feel whole, complete. They reminded me of the important things in my life. They reminded me that I am strong and capable of anything.
My time in the gym reminded me that I should look back at my lifting log to remind myself what I was leg pressing last week so I didn’t lift 15 pounds more…even though I crushed it with the huge weight jump. Seriously though, I should take those chances, and step back if they are too much for me.
My walk reminded me that I should stop to watch the ducks, smell the flowers, watch the sunset. I am always on the go and rarely relax other than watching television. I need to stop and relax and remember to enjoy my life instead of breeze through it.

And, I already know that I should take Bo out on walks more to get him out of the house and yard. I’m going to work him up to a 5k running distance again so I can take him running this summer with me.
Plus this gives me more opportunities for my favorite Bo selfies and I can’t pass all of that up!2015-05-18 20.04.16
What have your workouts shown you, taught you or helped you realize?

Bo visits Fort Meigs & Perrysburg > Maumee

Growing up our backyard opened up into Fort Meigs, a state memorial and Ohio’s War of 1812 Battlefield. There was a lot of history living right in our backyard. My brother, Karl, and I had the best childhood roaming around the Fort.
I am trying to take Bo on walks at local parks instead of only around our neighborhood, so Fort Meigs seemed a valuable spot. 2015-04-18 16.39.15

What is Fort Meigs?
General William Henry Harrison built Fort Meigs on the Maumee River in 1813 to protect northwest Ohio and Indiana from British invasion. Today’s reconstruction is one of the largest log forts in America. British and Canadian troops, assisted by Indians under Tecumseh, besieged the fort twice. The 10-acre log enclosure with 7 blockhouses and 5 emplacements presented a formidable defense. The first assault was in May of 1813 and the second was in July. Both failed and the British retreated after the second.

The blockhouses contain exhibits explaining Ohio’s participation in the War of 1812 as well as the life at Fort Meigs. Artifacts recovered from the original fort are on display.

Karl and I would spend hours in the woods just next to the Fort. We would build forts and booby traps for unsuspecting visitors. Essentially, we did something that kids today don’t really do all that often…we played outside AND used our imaginations!!

Two of the best sledding hills in the area are also found at the park, although, sledding isn’t allowed at all. But, when did the rules apply to something fun, like sledding? Exactly, never.
This is the smaller of the two hills. It is still fast and launches you into the wooded area at the bottom of the hill. I didn’t grab a picture of the crazy steep hill, but it is only for those who don’t mind sledding at a 60* angle towards the Maumee River. Karl actually had someone run over his wrist on a sled and it broke. As a big sister, it was hilarious to me and I taunted him accordingly.
2015-04-18 16.45.51Fort Meigs is in Perrysburg, my hometown and where I currently live. As a senior in high school you know that one of your duties as you enter your final year of mandatory education is painting the old bridge pillars. The goal was to beat our rival, Maumee High School, there and to do a much better job than them. You wanted to paint more than them and get higher than they did. You can still see some of the old artwork on there; the American flag and then in the next picture, you’ll see that Adam ♥ Lauren and the ugly purple and yellow Maumee colors that live there.
2015-04-18 16.48.35I would like to say I remember just who won out my senior year of high school, but I would like to assume that the better of the schools prevailed. Perrysburg Yellow Jackets > Maumee Panthers.
In the background of this picture is the river view of Fort Meigs. The Fort Meigs State Monument stands tall and you can make out some of the log exterior.
DSCI00111-1024x760Bo had a great time smelling all the things and chasing all the animals. I think I am a better dog mom when I get him out of the neighborhood. The only downside is that other dog owners think Bo is so small and cute, so he MUST meet their dog. Worst idea ever. Bo plays rough, like teeth bared and I want to pretend rip your throat out rough. Most dogs and their owners aren’t ready for that action, so I have to tell them that Bo doesn’t play nicely. Either way, we had a great afternoon at Fort Meigs. Plus, I think I found a new hairstyle that really plays up my facial features.

Hands-Free Hipster Jogging Leash Review

I love taking my Bo on short runs with me. It gets him out of the house, he gets exercise, and I think that it makes him happy. After a run he smothers me in kisses and I believe they are thank you kisses.

A few months ago I found out that I have a decent sized herniated disc in the L5-S1 region of my spine. This translates to the very low back. Most people with this type of herniation experience pain or numbness in the legs and very few people experience actual back pain from this back injury. I am one of the few who doesn’t get any leg pain in any way and I am cursed with some extreme back pain in that part of my spine. It can completely incapacitate me and I have it so much. I feel like I am completely worthless when I have trouble doing anything normal.

This all means that I haven’t run with Bo since I received this diagnosis. Bo doesn’t just run, he pulls…with extreme force. I am scared that he is going to dart side to side, like he always does, and put too much pressure on the bad part of my back and cause pain. He has done it before and I don’t want it to happen again. So, we have taken a few walks to try and break my fears of hurting my back. Naturally, this all excites Bo. The instant I even reach for his leash he begins to lose his mind in joy.2014-12-14 08.09.25

I was sent the Hands-Free Hipster Jogging Leash to try out with Bo. I thought that having Bo attached to my core instead of by an arm may be a good way to help my fear of hurting my back again. I tried it on and it was seriously comfortable. When we walked there wasn’t any uncomfortable chaffing or spots on the belt that were tight when Bo pulled me. The leash is included in the box and the belt has pockets for your keys, some cash or even a cell phone can fit. I tucked a few small dog treats in the pocket and Bo really dug that of course!

At $34.95, the Hipster leash is a fantastic value for dog owners who want running with their dog to be more comfortable. Do you know a runner who takes their dog out for runs? This would be an amazing gift and a nice way to free up a runners’ hands during a run. Through this side, the Hipster Leash is only $29.95 with FREE shipping right now!

If you have any questions, or you have tried out the leash yourself, then please let me know!
I highly recommend this product for any runner, or even walker, that enjoys taking their dog out for some 1-on-1 time out on the streets.

Random Pictures Edition

I know that I’ve said it 100334 times in the past few months, but holy busy. I can’t find the time (or I am really struggling to make the time) for certain things in my life. Blogging being one of them. Luckily, after this weekend, my craziness settles down!

A few weeks ago the microwave started giving off an electrical/burning smell. Naturally we watched and waited for it to die. And it never died and never smelled like that again. Other than being a place for our toaster oven to live, it is an integral piece of kitchen equipment. I got to thinking, and this microwave is over 16 years old. I am probably jinxing myself by putting this out there, but 16 is a long time, right?

2014-10-15 07.03.24

I was digging through my night stand and found my grandma’s old bible. She has passed away, but I found this picture inside of it. My grandma is on the left, looking quite fetching if I do say so. This was most likely taken in the 1930’s. Isn’t it amazing how fashion changes?
2014-11-02 16.15.59

I was in New York City last week for work and my hotel room had the most amazing view. I looked directly down on Times Square. I was pretty impressed. Thankfully the hotel is smart enough to know just how bright Times Square is and had black out shades for the windows.
2014-11-06 21.18.54And just to close out on a cute note, here is my Bo. He was excited when I came home from my business travel last weekend and didn’t let me out of his sight all weekend. I caught this cute face when he was napping on me.
2014-11-02 17.17.59-1How old is your microwave? 16 is crazy old if you ask me. I am so scared it is going to die now that I said this out loud…

Bo Knows Running

There is nothing better than the feeling you get after a good workout.
I have been consistently lifting over the past few months, but I am adding in a lot more cardio lately. Not as much as I’d like, but more. And more of most things is always better! I try to involve Bo in my short runs when I can. It gets him out of the house, gets him some exercise and I think it is a nice way to show him that I like spending time with him. If dogs think that way, that is.
Bo is a smart little shit, too smart at times. He knows that when he wears his invisible fence collar he can’t leave the yard. He also knows that when he squeezes out of the door, and his invisible fence collar isn’t on, that he can run out of the yard. He knows the difference.
He also knows that when I pull clothes from my exercise clothes drawer, I am going running or out.
He knows when I pull my running shoes off of the shelf, he has a chance to run with me.
And when he sees the collar and harness come out, he knows to go ape shit because he gets to run!

I put his harness on last night after I returned home from the gym and before I could do anything else, he grabbed his leash and ran around the kitchen. I think it was to let me know to hurry my ass up, and that he was pretty amped to get out.

2014-09-25 10.10.25I knew it would be a shorter run, especially since Bo hasn’t been out running in awhile, I didn’t want to wear him out too much.
There are a few secluded sidewalks that wind along a creek that runs through our neighborhood. When I can, I run there. It is peaceful and I like the alone-time honestly. On a Bo run, I let him call the shots most of the time. If he wants to stop and stare at the bushes because he heard something, I stop with him. If he wants to stop and stare at the white dogs we always pass on our runs, I stop with him. And when he wants to haul ass on the secluded sidewalks that wind along the creek, I haul ass with him.

2014-09-25 10.11.49We only ran around 1.5 miles. Like I said, I didn’t want to go too far for his first time out in months. He was beat by the time we got home, and extremely thirsty. After he downed a bowl of water, he laid on the floor to cool off. I crouched down to pet him and he popped up to give me a big ‘ol kiss. I know that this was a thank you kiss for taking him out running. How do I know? Because Bo is my dude and we can communicate through our thoughts. Really? Hell no, I just want to believe that this was a thank you kiss. (It was).

2014-09-25 10.12.53I can feel a difference in running since I lost almost 40#. It is easier to get my butt moving and I am really not getting tired as easily. My heart is still giving me the same inefficiency at high heart rate issue, so that won’t ever change. It was great running in this cooler fall weather and I foresee many more runs with Bo in the future!

Bo’s 3rd Birthday

My little guy turned three yesterday! I cannot believe that he has been mine for almost three years!
Bo is my shadow at home. If I am in the room, he is there too. If I am in bed sleeping, he is too. He is amazing with handing out the cuddles and kisses. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect dog for myself and the family.

I took him out yesterday after work to celebrate at PetSmart. We walked everywhere and he smelled it all!

2014-07-28 17.49.28 2014-07-28 17.50.07 2014-07-28 17.51.52

We spent some time in the toy aisle but he didn’t get excited about any of it. I haven’t bought him an actual toy in well over a year. Anything soft and fluffy is destroyed in mere minutes and he doesn’t get into ropes and stuff like that. Bo’s ‘toy’ of choice is a huge bone that takes him 5 weeks to chew on. One thing I have learned about Bo over three years is that he is a chewer. Never of furniture. Bo just likes to chew my things. Glasses (two pairs), night guard, library book, my food…the list goes on. Bo likes MY things. So, I have focused on getting him toys that fulfill his need and love to chew.

This is what we ended up with. The mini knotted bones on the left are not really a birthday treat, these are a staple in the house for my pup. The mini treats on the bottom right are staples too, for when he does good things.  Anyways, the actual gifts we got were the giant bone and the rawhide twists. He loves these giant bones and it takes him months sometimes to eat them!

2014-07-28 18.11.39

He was also in puppy heaven yesterday because I let him stick his cute little head out the window to catch a face-full of wind on the way home.

2014-07-28 18.03.09 2014-07-28 18.03.16 2014-07-28 18.04.26

He tried one of each of his new treats and proceeded to take a two hour nap. Seriously? But when he woke up he was ready to play! I know I didn’t get to make my boy’s birthday special, but I hope he knows that I love him everyday, not just on his birthday.

Do you do anything special for your pet on their birthday?
Do you even know your pet’s birthday?
Am I nuts because I do?
