Dave’s 10-Miler & 5k on January 21, 2018

This is my next ‘distance’ race. And 2018 seems SOOO far away, but holy geez it’s in a couple of weeks. 

I ran the 10-Miler in 2016 and, while it was a blustery and chilly day, it wasn’t as miserable as previous races have been. Delta, Ohio isn’t a great destination for running. Why? Because it is flat farmland with zero windbreaks. There are minimal hills in NW Ohio and our largest ‘hills’ are freeway overpasses. We go over two of them and they can be challenging if you’re used to flat road runs. Don’t get me wrong! I love this race (and Delta) and the obstacles it throws at you, but visually…not the best.

The great thing about running the 10-Miler in January is that I am already at a great training distance in my long runs to prep for the Owens Corning Half Marathon on Sunday, April 22, 2018. My 10-Miler time was pitiful and I think I can set a new PR by about 10 minutes.

I am looking to smash my current half PR by 20-25 minutes. I set my PR years ago and my running/heart/knee have all improved significantly and I am ready to kick some serious ass.

REALLY looking forward to getting back to distance running.

Miracle on Main Street 5k & Santa’s Little Helpers Dash

December is when? Tomorrow? No, that’s not right. Labor Day was just last week and I’m pretty sure that Thanksgiving came early this year.

I can’t believe that it is, first of all, the beginning of the holiday season, and secondly, almost 2018. What the hell is that? It is incredibly cliché, but the older you get, the years definitely get shorter and time moves at the speed of light, no, ridiculous speed, no…ludicrous speed! When life goes by that quickly, everything goes plaid. (bonus points if you know what movie this is from)

Well, as long as the holidays are here, it’s time to celebrate like it’s 1999 – I just graduated high school with no clue what I wanted to do with my life and I hated running. Hated with a passion is more like it. Fast forward to 2017 and I am geeked to run the Miracle on Main Street 5k and Santa’s Little Helpers Dash. Well, I’m not running the Dash, only the 5k. I looooove me a holiday race. This is the second year for the race and the inaugural race was seriously fun, so I have high hopes for this year.One of the coolest things about this race is the swag. No, it’s not your average race t-shirt. It is a long stripey scarf that is totally warm and incredibly stylish. The scarf comes in red/white and green/white stripes. Last year I went for the green and this year I’m scouting out a red one. I need a collectible set.

While I’m not a fan of long straight stretches of running in a race, I like this course because it goes through neighborhoods and has some fun spectator support along the way. If you didn’t register yet, you can sign up here or the day of the race, by 3:45 p.m. for the 4 p.m. start.

After not running many races in 2017, I guess I’m ending the year with a bang – including this coming Sunday, I’ll have run three 5k’s in 11 days. I’m incredibly happy to be back in the running game and getting pretty stoked to start training for the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon.

Dave’s Turkey Chase 5k – Things you Need to Know

It is almost Thanksgiving and that means it is almost time for Dave’s Turkey Chase 5k, 1 Mile Walk and Kids Run! This is the third year that a group of over 2,500 gobblers will run the streets of downtown Toledo to help raise money for charity and attempt to offset some Thanksgiving gorging.

The race benefits three charities, Cherry Street Mission Ministries, Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Hannah’s Socks. Click on the charity name to give to others in need. You can also bring canned goods, socks, and shoes to the race to donate.

If this is your first year running this awesome race or you are incredibly forgetful year after year, here is a map of the race course. It is extremely hard to get lost. You’re running with over 2,500 people in your running family and it is a giant rectangle. The course has marshals everywhere to help keep you on the course and they’re very supportive, too.

If you need the course directions in writing because maps aren’t your thing, here you go:
The run course will loop through Downtown Toledo. It starts on Summit St. at WTOL 11, turning right onto Monroe St. passed 5/3 Field, then turns right onto Huron St. passing by the Huntington Center. The course continues on Huron St. across Cherry St. to Bush St; turns right on Bush St. going passed the YMCA, then turning right on Summit St., left on Lagrange and right on Water St. to the finish at WTOL 11.

Monday’s Motivation – Thanksgiving Edition

Yes, this is the holiday centered around eating. Do you have to stuff your face until you hit a food coma in order to enjoy the food that you or a loved one cooked? Nope. You’ll be just as satisfied with smaller portions at your meal. If you really didn’t get enough, then go back for a second small portion.

Sure, I say this now, but in the heat of the moment it can be crazy difficult to remember. That is my goal for this year. Small portions of all of the things so I don’t hate myself after I eat.

The Struggle Bus

When it comes to running, bodybuilding, and losing weight – consistency is key.

Getting out to run, getting to the gym, and eating better can be so easy some days and painful the others. The painful days are when you really have to remember that consistency is key.
Nothing changes if nothing changes.

It is easy to hop on the struggle bus and let it take you away from running, the gym, and towards all of the delicious food you shouldn’t be overeating. (eating delicious food isn’t bad, eating too much of it is)

There are two months until 2018 begins. (wow, right? freaking 2018) Don’t wait until the new year to start to change the things you want. Think of how much you can accomplish in two months instead of waiting.
