don’t let the sprain get you down

Most of us have felt it. That moment your foot and ankle twist in a way that only the possessed girl in The Exorcist can replicate on command. You feel your body weight sit on the joint in a disgusting way and for that millisecond, you feel as if your ankle is going to break. It is a horrible feeling that I don’t wish on anyone. Okay, I don’t wish it on almost everyone.

On Wednesday, at the December Dash 5.1 Mile race, I sprained my ankle. Around mile 2.5 of the race. I was being incredibly careful as I ran because the streets weren’t plowed for shit and the sidewalks were rarely any better. I was doing the baby step run, where you look like the range of motion in your legs has all but disappeared. I hit a small mound of what I assume was snowy-covered bastard ice and my right ankle rolled outward leaving me cursing the very ground I stood on.

I waited a few minutes, walked it out, then continued to run the remainder of the race because I am a stupid runner and when it comes to injuries, almost all runners are stupid. I still did the baby step run and walked it out when I needed to. After a few days of swelling, some bruising and ZERO pain at all, I’m almost to the point where I don’t feel the need to wrap it during the day. I am going to be incredibly cautious though, the Owens Corning Half Marathon is in 110 days – or 3 months and 20 days, and I have to be in tip top shape in order to crush my PR.

Because I am making the adult decision to be careful, I haven’t run at all since the sprain (duh) and I haven’t lifted either. The extra weight on my leg could have been a dumb idea when it was swollen and I decided to couch it. I’m going to lift tonight and try my best to not engage my ankle at all. I could be there for 5 minutes or I could get a full lift in. We’ll see.

Have you sprained your ankle?
How did you handle it?
