Glass City Marathon 5k Race Review

I cannot believe that it has been five days since the Glass City Marathon. Race weekend flew by, probably due to the excitement of race day!
I ran the Glass City 5k due to heart issues and simple lack of proper training. I had never run the 5k before, so I was looking forward to seeing what this race was like. I had a goal for this race, having not really trained at all for the 5k and coming off of some heart pain, I wanted to hit under 35 minutes, I would be extremely happy with that time. It was in the lower-middle of my PR and PW race times.

It was chilly on race morning, only in the mid-30s. The weather would warm up perfectly for running in the next few hours, but the morning was still COLD. After the marathon and Owens Corning Half Marathon runners left, the 5k runners and walkers lined up.

2015-05-01 09.54.27I felt pretty good through the first mile and it seemed like the first mile marker came up pretty quickly, thank goodness. The first mile runs through the neighborhood that borders The University of Toledo campus, Old Orchard. It is a beautiful neighborhood with tree-lined streets and unique brick houses. After the neighborhood, we ran inside UT’s campus (bottom picture) and ended up alongside the Glass Bowl, where the finish line was waiting.

2015-05-01 09.52.59One of my things, when it comes to running, is sprinting to the finish line when I see it. I don’t care how long I’ve been running or the mileage I’ve just put in…I sprint my ass off. This race was no different and during my sprint I passed eight people. EIGHT PEOPLE! I feel like I won the race to the finish line. It is always so exhilarating to pass someone at the last minute. Does that make me mean or is it just my competitive spirit shining through?

One of my favorite things about The Glass City Marathon is the finisher’s mug you receive at the finish line! This is my fourth mug, now I have a full set! The mug’s design changed this year to match the new GCM logo, I love it. The new logo matches the finisher’s medals and my GCM Ambassador badge. It is pretty flashy. Another great thing about GCM is the post-race beer! Yup, beer! I enjoyed two beers at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and I haven’t had beer taste that great in a long time! Who doesn’t love early morning beer after a 5k? No one. I was able to catch up with a friend over morning beers, it couldn’t have been much better.
2015-05-01 09.51.59Now, about my finish time.
I finished in 35:08. Only eight seconds off from my goal time. I’ll take it! I am shocked that I was running 11:19 minute miles, that seems like I was flying through the race course!
2015-04-26 14.21.20I am SO proud of myself for this race. I hit my goal!!!!
I would highly recommend this race to anyone looking for a fun 5k in the Toledo area. And did I mention free beer after the race?
